چکیده

Two experiments using calves fed 173 d from November to May (WINTER) and yearlings fed 145 d from May to September (SUMMER), were conducted to evaluate the effects of feeding a high inclusion level of both wet distillers grains plus soluble (WDGS) and wheat straw or a corn control diet (CON) on ADG, F:G, manure N, and N losses. In each experiment, 128 steers (WINTER: 311 ± 10 kg, SUMMER: 365 ± 5 kg) were stratified by BW and assigned randomly to 16 pens (8 steers/pen). Four treatments were tested as a 2X2 factorial with factors being diet and pen cleaning frequency (monthly or at the end of the feeding period). Diets consisted of 85% corn, 5% molasses, and 5% wheat straw (CON) or 70% WDGS and 25% wheat straw (WDGS+straw). Both diets contained 5% supplement. In both the WINTER and SUMMER experiments, the CON treatment had greater DMI, ADG, HCW, marbling and fat depth. There was greater N intake and N excretion for both the WINTER and SUMMER experiments on the WDGS+straw however, for the WINTER experiment, there was not a difference in the amount of N in the manure nor for pen cleaning frequency. In the SUMMER experiment, cleaning pens monthly almost doubled DM, OM, and N removed in manure. There was a tendency for the WDGS+straw treatment to have greater N loss than the CON treatment in the WINTER experiment and a significant

Feeding of Wet Corn Milling Byproducts to Beef Cattle

Corn milling byproducts are expected to increase dramatically in supply. Two primary types of milling processes currently exist, resulting in quite different feed products. The dry milling process produces distillers grains plus solubles, and the wet milling process produces corn gluten feed. These feeds can be marketed as wet feed, or they can be dried and marketed as either dry corn gluten fe...

Co-product and Rumen Degradable Protein Supplementation of Beef Steers Fed Bahiagrass Forage

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of feeding co-products with Optigen ® II on animal performance and blood metabolites in growing beef calves. Angus steers were allowed ad libitum access to bahiagrass hay and were supplemented for 42 d via Calan gates. Treatments included 1) dried distillers grains; 2) dried distillers grains + Optigen; 3) soybean hulls; 4) soybean hulls + Opt...

Dried Distillers Grains and(or) Soybean Hulls to Background Beef Calves Fed Bahiagrass Forage

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of supplementing dried distillers grains soybean hulls, or combinations of the two to growing beef steers consuming bahiagrass hay. Angus steers were randomly allotted to one of four supplement treatments. Treatments included: 1) dried distillers grains; 2) dried distillers grains/soybean hulls; 3) soybean hulls/distillers grains; 4) soyb...

Preservation and Feeding of Wet Distillers Grains to Dairy Cattle

Distillers’ grains continue to be one of the most readily available co-products in use in the Midwest. Its price is driven not only by that of other concentrate feeds (such as corn and soybean meal) but also by supply and demand. Its popularity has increased in recent years among dairy producers, grain elevators, and nutritionists due to its high nutrient density, competitive price, and availab...

Characteristics of Beef Finished on Wet Distillers Grains with Varying Types and Levels of Roughage

Beef knuckles (n = 160) were obtained from source-verified cattle finished on 30% wet distillers grains plus solubles enriched with varying levels of alfalfa hay, corn silage, or corn stalks based on NDF. Our objectives were to determine if roughage inclusion, in conjunction with wet distillers grains plus solubles and cattle location affects beef flavor. Data from this study indicate type and ...
